September 6, 2011- Central University College commences Mobile Learning Today. The Institution started processing Mobile Learning since November 2009, with an Hi-Tech firm AD-CONNECT Mobile; Pioneering Mobile Learning in Africa.
As part of the preparation for the institution to fully adopt mobile learning, serveral pilot project was held. During the entire process we observed a high level of motivation in the students. This was due both to the expectation and changed pedagogic framework produced by the introduction and blend of m-learning with face-to-face classroom setting mode of education delivery.
One of the students said: "wow, this is different and great. It is a new way of learning a subject that many of us are scared of because it is complicated. But this method of doing so, with mobile phone, is more entertaining, more didactic, and easier.’ Another also added: "It is a tool that engages our interest to learn new things and at the same time save time."
Rev. Godson Ahiagbor in his report on behalf of the lectures said: "Mobile learning will enhance collaboration between students and lecturers, by lecturers sending their notes to them and getting feed back in the lecture theaters. This would prevent students from being idle with their time and put them into better use, by learning their notes and doing their assignments. It can help lecturers monitor progress of their students through mobile learning. Mobile learning can help lecturer assess students with assignments and Mid-Semester Examination and get immediate results (when Multiple Choice is adapted)."
Some benefits of using Mobil Learning includes; track students understanding of lessons taught, what students do with their lecture notes, delivering assignments, conducting polls and surveys, instant exam results, and would help students to revise before coming for lectures.'
However, students must be encouraged to have compatible phones and school should provide reliable wireless internet service to ensure that the process work smoothly. Lecturers are of the view that Mobil Learning will be useful to both students and lecturers and will promote healthy academic environment".According to Adiel Ntuk, the CEO, AD-CONNECT, "Central University is the first institution in West Africa to adopt Mobile Learning. This technology provides m-learning platform for students and teachers as supportive platform to the traditional classroom making teaching and learning accessible outside normal school hours anywhere, anytime.
Administratively, it provides the university with structures to send SMSs to all students, or all students in a particular grouping about timetable changes, examination deadlines, assignment results, and changes of procedure that all institutions need to immediately communicate to their students.
Provides academic summaries of content, examination hints, assessment questions for course revision, guidelines for courses and counseling for students in need."
Adiel continued that, "The University will be one of the Private most effective institution in Africa with its trends on understanding the technological changes to suit the growing needs of Learners
