WORKSHOP ON MOBILE LEARNING

FIRST WORKSHOP ON MOBILE LEARNING HELD

Today, November 29, 2011 the first Workshop on Mobile Learning held. This workshop was held at the Conference Center and Auditorium of the Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC), Ghana. The workshop started at about 9:30 GMT and ended at 17:00 GMT.

Several Dignitaries and representatives from different schools and organizations in Ghana attended the workshop. Also in attendance was Professor Knud Skouby - Director CMI Copenhagen, Denmark, who joined the workshop through Video Conference. The Workshop was chaired by the President of Ghana Telecom University College, Dr. Osei Darkwa. Nana Kofi Annan, a PhD Fellow  at Aalborg University, Denmark was the main speaker at this workshop.

Guest at this workshop were; Rev. Emmanuel K. Dadebo of INSET Unit (Teacher Education Division)- Ghana Education Service Hqtrs, Accra, Associate Professor Mortein Falch of Aalborg University, Denmark,  Dr. Aflakpui and Rev. Godson Ahiabor of Central University College, Ms. Regina Dzodzomanyo and John K. Appiah of West African Examination council (WAEC), representatives from WISCONSIN International University College, Ghana, representatives of Kofi Anna International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), representatives from Valley View University, representaives from The Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS).

Also at the workshop were representatives from Garden City University College, Kumasi,  representatives from the University of Education, Winneba, representatives from Ghana Police Training College, Methodist University Ghana, Ghana Institute of Journalism, Catholic Institute of Business and Technology, Regional Maritime University, Zenith University College, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Griffith University, Australia, Koforidua Polytechnic, Ghanaian Times, Accra Institute of Technology (AIT), University of Cape Coast (UCC), Africa University College of Communications (AUCC). Professor Knud Skouby -Director CMI Copenhagen, Denmark started the workshop with keynote addresses, and was immediately followed by the President of Ghana Telecom University College; Dr. Osei Darkwa, with welcome message asking the participants to utilize and pursue Mobile learning course, and also take something back to improve their academic performance in their various institutions. 

Nana Kofi Annan continued the workshop with introductory statements as shown in the workshop agenda. (see  Workshop Agenda)

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together various stakeholders to discuss the use of mobile technology for education delivery in Ghana. The workshop seeks to provide a better understanding of m-learning so as to encourage it use and acceptance by institutions to facilitate teaching and learning.

The significance of the workshop is to contribute to national discussions on the use of various ICTs in education in Ghana and to demonstrate m-learning. This workshop is largely inspired by the way mobile devices are becoming smaller with stronger functionalities and more popular for learning among young adults. The expected outcome of the workshop include creating awareness on the possibility of using mobile education in Ghana and also participants will be well informed on how to leverage on different kinds of educational technologies to facilitate teaching and learning.

During the Live Demonstration of Mobile Learning, the CEO - AD-CONNECT Mobile, Mr. Adiel Ntuk commended Central University College for fronting and appreciating Mobile Learning Technology in Ghana and in West Africa  and motivated the participants and organization present  to follow suit, for this is the trend of our time.

Rev. Godson Ahiabor of the Central University College who is Mobile Learning Coordinator during his introduction told the audience that his main purpose of attending the conference is to share his experiences and ideas about Mobile Learning adopted by his school to his fellow participants and to learn more.

Dr. Benjamin Aflapkui (HOD) Physician Assistantship (PA) commended Hot Lava Mobile and AD-CONNECT for their presence in Africa and said that this technology will do well to touch the lives of African especially those in the rural areas who are practicing Physician Assistanship (PA), that contents are being distributed and are being developed using Hot Lava Mobile Technology  to deploy to Physician Assistanship in Ghana and Nigeria through Central University College.
